S4CD President Alex Posner joined a panel last week at Georgetown on carbon pricing and the pathway to a bipartisan breakthrough. The event also featured Congressman Jamie Raskin (MD-8), Dr. Karen Palmer (Resources for the Future), and Dr. Parrish Bergquist (Professor at the McCourt School of Public Policy at Georgetown), and was moderated by Dr. Dagomar Degroot (Professor of Environmental History. The Georgetown Renewable Energy and Environmental Network (GREEN) and Georgetown CCL Chapter served as co-hosts for the event.

The conversation touched on a wide range of environmental topics, but all panelists agreed that a market-based mechanism like carbon pricing would be highly effective in delivering emissions reductions and helping address the climate challenge.

In his remarks, Posner highlighted the S4CD’s work in organizing the Economists’ Statement on Carbon Dividends, signed by leading economic voices across the political spectrum—all in support of carbon pricing and the carbon dividends solution. He also discussed the recent launch of the Student Government Leaders’ Statement on Carbon Dividends, which has been signed by 350+ student body presidents across the country. Both statements, Posner said, point to the unique cross-party appeal of the carbon dividends and the opportutniy to forge a durable, bipartisan solution.

Particularly as we head into a new Congressional session, remembering the importance of bipartisanship will be more critical than ever. Only a bipartisan, legislative solution can ensure the US delivers a clear, predictable solution that stands the test of time.

The event concluded by discussing opportunities for students to plug-in the movement, including as part of S4CD.
